Apple Ipad SIM Card Sizes

Apple Ipad SIM Card Sizes

With Christmas just around the corner I feel it is time to tackle one of the more confusing issues in the communications industry.

If you are treating yourself or will receive an Apple iPad present for Christmas then you are going to be one happy tablet user.

But, you must choose the right sized SIM card for the model you have received if you are going to use the device over a phone network.

There are currently three different sized SIM cards on the market and three different iPad models that can still be purchased today.

iPad Mini and iPad Air

The iPad Mini or iPad Mini with Retina display is the smallest of the iPad tablet range and delivers a great user experience. The latest full-size iPad is the Apple iPad Air which was just released in the last couple of months.

These gadgets can be used in several ways; over Wi-Fi or via a mobile phone network signal. Wi-Fi is the most cost effective mode of connection if you have a home Wi-Fi system or use Wi-Fi hot spots when out and about.

The beauty of Wi-Fi is there is no cost so you can browse the internet and even make voice and video calls with a VoIP (voice over internet protocol) service from the likes of Skype or FaceTime.

After this mode of connection we are looking at using a mobile phone network to connect to the internet or make calls. The advantage here is of course you will have a phone signal almost everywhere.

To connect to a mobile phone network you will need an iPad SIM card and SIM only deal. There are two types of deals on the market and these include just data for internet access only or voice and data.

In each instance you will be given an amount of free time in return for a monthly line rental and you will need a Nano-SIM card.

Apple iPad 2

This model has now been replaced by the iPad Air but it is still available and at a reduced cost. The difference with this model is that there is the option to make phone calls using a mobile phone network.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t make voice calls though. You can use an internet connection provided by Wi-Fi or a mobile phone network and make VoIP calls via FaceTime or Skype.

There is a different sized iPad SIM card here to use, a Micro-SIM card, and this will give you access to the internet almost anywhere. As there is no voice calling over a mobile phone network you will only see SIM card deals that have free data / internet usage.

Apple iPhone

Although not on our original topic here I will just mention the iPhone models should you receive one as a Christmas present but without a connection to a phone network. The iPhone 4 series uses the Micro-SIM card and for this product you can get voice and data packages. The iPhone 5 series uses the smallest card on the market, the Nano-SIM.
