How to Share File With Other Users?

Sharing files on computer means that you let other people who share the computer with your or people on your network read and even use the materials and resources on your computer. Now the windows operating system makes sharing files and folders simple and straightforward.

Now I will show you how to share files on Vista and how to stop and change sharing of a file. I introduce two methods sharing files on computer: sharing files on public folder, sharing files from other folder.

1. Share files on public folder

The files shared in pubic folder can be accessed by all other users of your computer; you even don’t need to do a thing. All users who can access your computer can view, paste, copy, modify, create and delete files in the public folder by default. People who add a new file- either create or copy a file- on the public folder has full control of the file. This method is fast for sharing files with users on local computer. To share files in public folder with network users, you need to configure some settings. Click on “Start”- “Network”- “Network and Sharing Center”, and then turn on Public Folder Sharing. Sharing files in public folder is rigidly inflexible; all the files on the public folder can be accessed by the users of your computer and users on your network. You can’t specify users to access some certain files and prevent them accessing other files on the public folder.

2. Share files from other folder

Sharing files from other folder is more flexible and fast. Click on “Start” button, type folder in search box and then click on “Folder Options”. Click the “View” tab, in the advanced settings you should make sure “Use Sharing Wizard(Recommended)” is checked. In Windows Explorer, select file or folder you want to share, and then click “Share” in command bar. Add user name you with whom you want to share the file/folder in file sharing box. For each user, you can specify their permission level. “Reader” has Read and execute permissions; Contributor has modify permission; Co-owner has full control. Click on “Share” after you configure the permissions and click “Done” to finish the setting.

If you want to stop sharing files with others, you can open Windows Explorer.

Here, click on “Share”- “Change sharing permissions”, you can remove names or change permissions of users to change their access permission.

You can also set advanced sharing properties by right clicking on the folder. If the Sharing Wizard disabled, you can right click the folder you want to share, and select properties. On sharing tab, click on Advanced Sharing, check “share this folder”. You can change share name and edit comments and limit the number of simultaneous users of the shared folder. Click Permissions, here you remove or add user name or user group and assign permissions to different users. After configuration, you can click on OK in the dialog.

This sharing feature of operating system is convenient, but it makes your skin scrawl when you need to set several user groups and each group has different permissions to the shared folder. If you desire an easier process of sharing files, you can try to use third party shared folder protection software.
