What Should Be Considered During Platform Selection for Mobile Testing?

Those who are familiar with mobile testing, desktop testing and web site testing well know that testing platforms are a significant element of each project. Their selecting and acquisition must be an integral part of preparations to a testing process.

A software testing company claims that selecting the platforms and their configurations may be quite a difficult task.

Nowadays there are lots of different mobile and desktop devices. So, if the platforms are not carefully selected, all the activities may be ineffective, useless and loss-making. That is why software testers must take this issue seriously.

Working on a Mobile Project One Has to Determine Where the Application is Supposed to be Used:

- on mobile phones;

- on tablets;

- both on mobile phones and on tablets.

It is also necessary to get to know on what operating systems the program under test will operate. Most of mobile software products are elaborated for a certain operating system, for example for iOS, for Android or for Windows Phone.

When these issues are clarified, it is necessary to determine some other details of the platforms. At present many models of mobile devices are available, they have various characteristics, different performance capacities, screen sizes. Besides, each operating system has numerous versions and sub-versions, the new versions and sub-versions frequently appear.

So, Choosing What Platforms Configurations to Utilize it is Wise to Take into Account:

- the devices (mobile phones or tablets, certain models of the devices);

- for what screen sizes the software must be suitable;

- on what operating system versions and sub-versions the program should function;

- in what locations the software must work;

- what languages the system supports.

If we are talking about a software product that requires Internet connection, networking issues must also be considered.

The Networking Issues Are:

- diverse networking technologies;

- various carriers;

- various locations of the device, including dead spots, places, where the signals are weak, transition points between different networks and so on;

- several popular web browsers, if the system under test is a web application.

All the mentioned aspects give substantial number of platform configurations. In case of tight time constrains their proper selecting and prioritizing is vital for a project.

That is why a professional software testing company always wants its testers to give due consideration to selecting of test platforms and their configurations.

This approach is efficient not only for mobile application testing, but for desktop testing as well.
