Toshiba Service Centre’s Tips: When Your Computer Won’t Turn On

If your computer won’t turn on, then it could be an indication that you need to pay your Toshiba service centre a visit. But before you do, you may want to do some basic troubleshooting first to determine if there’s really a problem or if the issue can be resolved at home.

About website has listed down several possible causes for your machine’s behaviour.

  • If it turns on – that is, if your computer beeps at start up or you hear the whirring of the fan – but no display comes out, then check if your monitor is plugged in properly, that it’s turned on, and that it’s connected to your CPU.

  • If it boots but you hear an unusual set of beeps, try to note what it sounds like. Your computer has encountered an error during its power-on self-test (POST) and those beeps can reveal what that problem is.

  • You can turn off your computer, then remove all accessories that you don’t need during the boot up process, then turn it on again. This will eliminate any external sources that could be causing your computer some difficulty.

  • If you turn on your unit and there is no power (no sound and no light), then you first need to make sure that your computer is plugged in, that your UPS or your power strip is turned on, and that the wall outlet is working.

  • Make certain that the problem is not your cable. To eliminate this possibility, try using another power cable.

  • You can also try to reseat your computer’s components. This means opening your PC, taking out your PC’s hardware such as the memory board, then putting it back in. You may want to let your technician do this if you’re not familiar with PC hardware.

If your unit is a laptop, then check if the problem is caused by the battery. Take out the battery and plug your machine directly onto the wall outlet.

It’s also highly recommended that you drain your laptop’s power. First, unplug it and take the battery out, then press the power button for 30 seconds without letting go. After half a minute, put the battery back in and plug your laptop. Turn your computer on.

Toshiba’s Troubleshooting Assistant can also provide help in determining the cause of the problem, and give possible solutions. If the problem persists, then you may want to consult your certified Toshiba technicians from a Toshiba Service centre near your location.
