Toshiba Service Centre’s Tips: When Your Computer Has No Audio

Losing your computer’s sound can be quite vexing, but it’s a common computer issue that may be caused by different reasons. The good news is, there’s a chance you can resolve the problem on your own. There are troubleshooting steps that you can do to attempt to restore your computer’s sound, the same ones that technicians in Toshiba service centres will initially do.


According the instructions given by Toshiba’s online support, these are the steps that you can take:


• Ensure that your speakers are properly connected to your computer, and that it’s plugged in to the power source.


• Make certain that your jacks are plugged in to the correct ports. Plug your front speakers onto the green port.


• Check that your volume control is not turned all the way down. Also, make sure that the audio setting in your computer is not set to mute. To do this, click on the speaker icon on the taskbar (near the clock) – there, you will see if it’s muted and if the volume level is at its lowest level. You can also right-click on the speaker icon, then click Open Volume Mixer to see and adjust the volume for your speakers and applications.


• Manage your sound settings. Right-click on the speaker icon, then choose Playback Devices. In the window, you will see your output devices. Click on your chosen device, click Properties, then adjust your settings accordingly. Also in Properties, make sure that your speakers or headphones are enabled.


To find out if you have a sound card or if it’s installed, go to Start, select Control Panel, choose System and Security, click Device Manager, then expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers. You will see if you have a sound card installed. If there is but there’s a yellow question mark beside its name, then you can right-click on it, choose Properties, General tab, then Device Status. This will give you information on any existing problem.


Sometimes, you need to reinstall your sound card’s driver. You can use the CD that came with your computer (if any), or download from the manufacturer’s website, or allow Windows Update to find the most recent driver for you.


If you continue to have audio problems, then you can take your machine to an authorised service centre to see if the problem is with your sound card, or if it’s due to other reasons. And its always smart to bare in mind to keep track of what brand your unit is, so if its a Toshiba unit, then bring it to a Toshiba service centre.
