In the course of a typical day, I usually receive several calls from lenders, who want me to make payments on my student loans. These people have been told repeatedly that I cannot make payments on my loans, yet they continue to call me, waste my time, and burn my minutes.
After receiving several calls like this, I feel like cussing out the callers, yelling at them, and throwing my phone against the wall. Instead, however, I usually turn on some music I like. I also run. Finally, I think pleasant thoughts, like how great it would be to be earning money from my writing. These ways of coping save my phone, and they help me to manage my stress. Recently, I thought about how different my life would be if I received different types of calls.
One call that I would love to receive would be a call from my favorite singer, Pink. I would be thrilled to get a chance to talk with her and to learn when she will be touring again. I could then save my money and look forward to a night that I would remember for the rest of my life. In addition to Pink, there are other people that I would like to hear from.
A second type of call that I would welcome would be a call from college friends I have not seen in years. Since the Facebook staff seems determined to lock me out, I have no idea what my friends have been up to lately. If I heard from them, we could talk and plan to get together.
Third, I would like to get a call from people who want to follow me on Twitter. I am always interested in how my words affect my readers. If they called me to let me know that they were following me and to ask me to follow them, I would know that my words affected them (hopefully in a positive way). I would feel good knowing that I was making a difference and gaining more followers in the process.
Since it is highly unlikely that I will receive calls from many of the people I want to hear from, and I will instead continue receiving unwanted calls, a solution to my problem would be to turn my phone off for a few hours each day. This way, I will stretch my minutes, get some peace and quiet, and perhaps get the pests in my life to leave me alone.
